Batsman Salman Butt is the new captain of the Pakistan cricket team.
The 25-year-old lefthander will lead Pakistan against Australia in the second test at Headingley, which starts Wednesday, and in four tests against England in July and August.
Butt says "the important thing is that we have to be patient" and told website Cricinfo that Pakistan's young squad will be "once again a force to reckon with."
Butt, who was vice captain, has played 28 tests for Pakistan with three centuries and an average of 32.75. His overall first-class average is 42.57.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi announced he was quitting test cricket after a 150-run defeat to Australia on Friday. Opener Butt topscored in both innings with 63 and 92.
