The Liberty Times: Ruler accountable for official corruption

President Ma Ying-jeou vowed to set up a new model of clean governance two years ago when assuming office. He pledged to turn the government sector into a locomotive to lead Taiwan into a new era. A recent spate of corruption scandals, however, are clear evidence that a depraved and decadent government is causing Taiwan to degenerate.
Not only the central government, but local governments are also regressing. In case of contingency, such a broken government machine would certainly be incapable of handling an urgent situation. The massive flooding caused by Typhoon Morakot a year ago, in which nearly 700 people were killed, triggered deep resentment among Taiwan's public.
Those holding power should be held responsible for this.
President Ma should have been able to launch a series of reforms in the government sector because the ruling Kuomintang controls a vast majority in the legislature, but he missed the opportunity by failing to take concrete action to back his words.
Taiwan's people definitely cannot turn a blind eye to such an incompetent government. (July 17, 2010).
