West Ham signs forwards Barrera, Piquionne

West Ham signed forwards Frederic Piquionne and Pablo Barrera on Friday as the Premier League club strengthened its squad for the new season.
The 23-year-old Barrera joined from Mexican club Pumas on a four-year deal for four million pounds ($6 million) and West Ham has the option to sign the winger for a further year.
"I am very fast and can use both feet," said Barrera, who featured three times for Mexico at the World Cup. "I like the one-on-one situations and to take on my opponent and beat my rivals. I like to excite the supporters.
"People have said that I am the sort of player that the fans want to have the ball as often as possible because I can make things happen."
Piquionne, 31, has joined on a three-year deal from Lyon after spending last season on loan at Portsmouth with manager Avram Grant, who left Fratton Park to take over at West Ham last month. Financial details weren't disclosed.
"I know Avram and I like working with him and I think he likes me," Piquionne said. "Avram is a very, very good coach. Last year we had many problems at Portsmouth but we got to the FA Cup final."
Barrera and Piquionne joined a day after the London club completed the signing of Thomas Hitzlsperger when the Germany midfielder was granted a British work permit.
West Ham, which finished one place above the relegation zone last season, begins the new Premier League season against Aston Villa on Aug. 14.
"The ambition here has to be to reach the top 10 and maybe to win the League Cup or the FA Cup," Piquionne said.
West Ham said "further major additions" should be announced in the coming days.
