Taiwan's Taiex index falls 0.5 percent

Taiwan's Taiex index fell 39.95, or 0.5 percent, at 7,664.57 at the close of Taipei trading. The benchmark index advanced 0.2 percent this week.
WiMAX-related stocks: WiMAX equipment maker Zyxel Communications Corp. (2391 TT) fell 5.2 percent to NT$19.35. Gemtek Technology Corp. (4906 TT) retreated 3 percent to NT$43.70. Accton Technology Corp. (2345 TT) lost 4.1 percent to NT$15.15. D-Link Corp. (2332 TT) dropped 2.3 percent to NT$25.10.
Intel Corp. may withdraw its investment in developing WiMAX technology in Taiwan, the Economic Daily News reported, citing speculation in the industry.
Chang Hwa Commercial Bank (2801 TT) gained 4.6 percent to NT$17.05, the highest since Sept. 12, 2008. The lender gained Taiwan regulatory approval to set up a branch in China’s Kunshan, the lender said in a filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday.
Largan Precision Co. (3008 TT), Taiwan's largest maker of lenses for digital cameras, retreated 3.6 percent to NT$564 after the company was downgraded to "neutral" from "buy" by Nomura Holdings Inc. analyst Anne Lee.
President Chain Store Corp. (2912 TT), the operator of 7- Eleven and Starbucks outlets in Taiwan and Shanghai, surged 6 percent to NT$106, the highest since June 6, 2008, after the company was raised to "outperform" from "neutral" by KGI Securities Co. analyst Steven Chan.
