AsusTek launches upgraded navigation smartphone

Taipei, July 16 (CNA) AsusTek Computer Inc. launched an upgraded navigation smartphone model on Friday that can provide three-dimensional road maps to drivers.
The new product, the Garmin-Asus M10E, takes the Garmin-Asus M10 the company unveiled in February a step further, the company said.
In February, AsusTek and U.S.-based global positioning system service provider Garmin Group set up an alliance to co-develop navigation cell phones, a move indicative of Asustek's efforts to diversify its product lines beyond personal computers.
Apart from the 3D road map design, the new model will also allow drivers to position themselves through satellite signals in about 33 seconds, compared with an average of 2-3 minutes for other models, said Lin Tsung-liang, the head of AsusTek's handheld business division.
Lin said the new model is equipped with software designed by Microsoft, and its information will be accessed through Chunghwa Telecom's mobile network.
The new product will be sold through Senao International's distribution network, he said.
Since February, AsusTek has sold about 20,000 Garmin-Asus M10s in Taiwan alone, Lin said.
AsusTek ranks among the top 10 smartphone vendors in Taiwan and will continue to develop specialty models, such as navigation cell phones, according to the executive.
In the first half of this year, AsusTek shipped 400,000 smartphones, 40 percent of the company's 1 million unit sales target for 2010, Lin said.
