Stocks fall slightly after mixed economic reports

U.S. stocks are falling slightly in early trading after a batch of economic reports showed economic growth remains tepid even as companies report strong earnings.
A regional manufacturing index in New York plummeted this month, while a national report showed modest growth in industrial output. The government also reported that first-time claims for unemployment benefits fell.
JPMorgan Chase became the latest company to report big profits, following Intel and Alcoa earlier in the week.
The Dow Jones industrial average is down 18.69, or 0.2 percent, at 10,349.24. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 1.85, or 0.2 percent, at 1,093.32, while the Nasdaq composite index is down 4.56, or 0.2 percent, at 2,245.28.
