Shanghai most popular destination for cross-strait flights

Taipei, June 10 (CNA) Shanghai is the most popular Chinese city served with direct cross-Taiwan Strait flights, boasting the highest passenger load factor of 82.5 percent among all cross-strait flights, according to statistics released by the Civil Aeronautics Administration Thursday.
The factor represents the percentage of seats in a vehicle that are actually used by fare-paying passengers.
At the other end of the spectrum is Xian in northern China, which recorded a passenger load factor of just 59.7 percent, according to the statistics.
In between are Guangzhou in southern China, with a factor of 79.2 percent, Shenzhen in southern China, at 75 percent, and Beijing, with a factor of 71.5 percent.
Taipei's Songshan Airport leads the field in Taiwan in terms of passenger load factor, with 79.4 percent, while Taoyuan, Taichung, Hualien and Taitung airports each have a factor of about 70 percent, with Kaohsiung bringing up the rear with a factor of 64.8 percent.
The overall factor for Taiwanese carriers that provide cross-strait services is 80.4 percent, compared to 77.3 percent for their Chinese counterparts, according to the statistics.
The regular cross-strait flights began Aug. 31, 2009 and currently there are 270 round-trip flights across the strait per week, and China and Taiwan agreed May 22 to increase the number to 370 per week.
The increase will see 50 additional round-trip flights for Taiwanese carriers, including 14 round-trip flights between Songshan Airport and Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport that will begin June 14.
The other 36 round-trip flights will be distributed among other local carriers but a detailed plan has not yet been worked out and will not be implemented until July 5, according to aviation officials.
