Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says the United States supports a new Sri Lankan reconciliation commission meant to soothe anger after the recent end of a quarter-century civil war.
But neither she nor Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Gamini Peiris directly responded Friday to activists' calls for Sri Lanka to allow independent foreign investigators to pursue war crimes allegations.
Clinton says the commission should investigate allegations of violations, make public its results and protect witnesses. Peiris says friendly countries must give the commission the space and support needed for it to succeed. He says Sri Lanka might be willing to talk with U.N. officials later.
Sri Lanka denies allegations of widespread war crimes.
