Taiwan railway trains to open women-only carriages

Taipei, May 28 (CNA) The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) will open the first car of its morning and night trains to women only, hoping to strengthen protection for female passengers, a TRA executive announced Friday.
The new measure came following reports that a high school girl was raped by a male passenger on a commuter train between Kaohsiung City and Fangliao Township in Pingtung County two days ago.
The girl boarded the train at 5: 17 a.m. Wednesday in Pingtung City and was raped at 6: 26 a.m. as the train reached Jiadong station in Pingtung County, TRA Deputy Managing Director Chang Ying-huei said, citing the man's confession after he was arrested.
The incident occurred just 11 minutes before the train arrived at its final destination in Fangliao, Chang added.
The train's chief conductor had told the police that he completed his final round of safety checks at 6: 20 a.m. and had never thought that a sex offense could happen in such a short period of time, according to Chang.
In addition to setting up cars exclusively for female passengers, the TRA will also launch waiting zones for women only at every railway station and equip trains with more monitoring and warning devices.
All train conductors will be requested to take the initiative to pay attention to female passengers, while railway police will be responsible for reinforcing patrols in trains and at train stations, Chang said.
