Magazine digest -- Changing face of industry and design in Taiwan

Taiwan's industries and designers are both at a crossroads. The industries are trying to find the next step beyond manufacturing for foreign companies, and the designers are seeking opportunities to set up their own businesses.
Manufacturing and trade have been the backbone of Taiwan's economy, but manufacturers in Taiwan no longer have the advantage of low costs. The decision industries now face is whether to change or to close down. The key to change is understanding how to use the knowledge, resources and technology acquired in the past to create added value and to develop new brands.
The industries realize that design is an essential aspect of their business, particularly in recent years, as Taiwanese designs have been winning awards around the world.
The textile industry is a good example. According to Taiwan Textile Federation, Taiwanese fabric suppliers are now supplying fashion brands with sample products made by in-house designers. This gives the customer an idea of the possibilities of the fabric and sets Taiwanese suppliers apart from their competitors.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese designers are learning business management.
Their priority is no longer to win awards to prove themselves. They are figuring out how to run a store and take inventory and are studying the industry chain, which are the commercial aspects of survival in the market.
Companies that are trying to change must undergo some trial and error and their management should be prepared for the challenges that could result from the new design aspect of the business.
Taiwanese companies that run successful assembly lines are not used to providing an environment in which employees could be freely creative, and that will be a big hurdle for companies to overcome, said Ann Yu-chien, dean of Shih Chien University's College of Design in Taipei.
