UK Conservatives gain seat in special election

The party leading Britain's new coalition government has picked up one more seat in the House of Commons.
The Conservative Party was declared the winner early Friday in a special election in the Thirks and Malton constituency in northern England.
While the rest of the nation voted on May 6, voting was delayed in this district because of the death of one of the minor-party candidates.
The winner was Anne McIntosh, who represented a different district in the House of Commons during the previous government.
The result gives the Conservatives 307 seats in the Commons, still short of a majority of 326.
