Germany likely to cut its number of armed forces

Germany says it is likely to cut the number of its troops from 250,000 to save money.
Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said Friday that "a decrease will be part of the debate" on how to reduce Germany's budget deficit. He refused to speculate on how many troops may be cut from the armed forces.
Guttenberg told ARD television such "bitter news" is necessary given budget constraints amid the global economic downturn.
Asked later whether this would have consequences for Germany's NATO contribution, Guttenberg said "it is too early to tell where the journey is leading us," but Germany is not the only country facing budget cuts.
Guttenberg has proposed trimming (EURO)1 billion ($1.24 billion) from the defense budget, currently (EURO)31 billion.
