Retrial of convicted Swedish serial killer dropped

A Swedish prosecutor has decided to drop the case against a convicted serial killer who had demanded a retrial in the 1988 murder of an Israeli tourist.
Sture Bergwall confessed to killing Yenon Levi in 1997 and was convicted. He has also been convicted of seven other murders to which he confessed.
Bergwall withdrew his confessions in 2008, saying he had made some of them under the influence of tranquilizers. Last year, the Svea Appeals Court granted him a retrial in the Levi case, saying doubts had been raised by some material that was not presented in the first trial.
On Friday, Chief Prosecutor Eva Finne said she would close the case for lack of evidence. Bergwall is expected to seek retrials for all his murder convictions.
