German ex-lawmaker convicted in child porn trial

A former German lawmaker has been convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography and given a suspended 15-month prison sentence.
The German news agency DAPD says the state court in Karlsruhe convicted Joerg Tauss on Friday.
Tauss has acknowledged possessing child pornographic material. But he strongly denies any wrongdoing, insisting that he was carrying out legitimate research aimed at breaking up a child porn ring in his capacity as a lawmaker. The defense had sought his acquittal.
Tauss left the German parliament last year. He already had left the center-left Social Democrats and switched his allegiance to the small new Pirate Party, whose platform calls for Internet freedom.
