Romanians go on strike over wage cuts

Unions say hundreds of thousands of Romanian public workers will go on strike next week to protest sweeping wage cuts the government is making to reduce the budget deficit.
Cartel Alfa union leader Bogdan Hossu says some 700,000 doctors, medical staff, teachers and other public workers are expected to take part in the strike on Monday.
Unions say subway and streetcar workers in Bucharest will stage a strike on Tuesday as a gesture of "solidarity."
Retirees also plan to take part in protests against planned pension cuts.
The government says it must cut public salaries by one-fourth and pensions by 15 percent starting June 1 to reduce the budget deficit to some 6.8 percent of gross domestic product.
