Allowance for stay-at-home parents mulled: interior ministry

Taipei, May 28 (CNA) Taiwan's Child Welfare Bureau (CWB) is assessing the feasibility of giving an allowance of NT$5,000 (US$156) per month to unemployed parents with kids that are 2 years old or younger, CWB Director-General Chang Hsiu-yuan said Friday.
"The subsidy would target low-income jobless parents, but the issue has not yet been settled, " Chang said in a news conference at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior, in response to a report by the Apple Daily.
After the measure takes effect, parents who have been granted NT$3,000 in subsidy for day care spending for their children of the same age will not be eligible for the new monetary assistance, Chang said.
The proposed subsidy stems from a campaign promise put forth by President Ma Ying-jeou before he came to office in May 2008.
