McLaren has shown it might challenge Red Bull for a Turkish Grand Prix victory this weekend as Lewis Hamilton led a 1-2 for the British team in Friday's opening practice session.
Hamilton's lap of 1 minute, 28.653 seconds was nearly a second faster than teammate Jenson Button, who finished in front of Mercedes pair Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
Sebastian Vettel was the faster Red Bull, finishing fifth fastest, while teammate and Formula One championship leader Mark Webber was eighth.
Robert Kubica of Renault was sixth and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso ninth at the "Otodrom."
Force India's Adrian Sutil crashed at the end of the 90-minute session, emerging from his car unhurt.
A second practice will be held later Friday.
