The ruling Kuomintang Legislator Nancy Chao today called for a coordination mechanism and integration of laws for regulating coast safety as the number of beachgoers is increasing with rising temperatures, according to Liberty Times report.

Chao noted at the state forum held in the Legislature that despite deaths caused by drowning on the decrease since 2005, there are still some 500 victims in 2008 according to the Department of Health (DOH) statistics

However, Chao said, as various buoying devices and swimming tools are circulating among dabblers, these kits are not completely covered in the existing rules concerning beach safety.

Chao, former head of the Sports Affairs Council under Executive Yuan, also warned that beach activities, under the current management system, fall under administrative scopes of tourism, fisheries, coast guard, environmental protection and local government. Without a feasible coordination regime, expectations for a safe summer at beach will be eroded again.

Meanwhile , Chao recognized the Tourism Bureau under Ministry of Transportation for its efforts to tout Taiwan’s marine resources by choosing five coastal sections as highlighted attractions despite concerns about the completeness of water safety mechanisms.
