Israel partly opens West Bank road to Palestinians

The Israeli military says it has partially opened a West Bank highway to Palestinian drivers to comply with a ruling of the country's highest court.
The road _ known as Highway 443 _ is a major link between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It was built by Israel in part on land expropriated from Palestinians. Israel banned Palestinian cars in 2002, after a string of Palestinian shooting attacks killed Israeli motorists.
The Supreme Court later ruled the ban was discriminatory and ordered the road opened despite the military's argument that the move would endanger Israelis.
Palestinians and Israeli human rights groups say Friday's opening is insufficient because army checkpoints still restrict Palestinians to a short, five-and-a-half mile section.
