AU Optronics, SunPower to build solar cell plant in Malaysia

Taipei, May 28 (CNA) AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) said Friday that it will join forces with SunPower Corp. of the United States to set up a US$700 million (NT$22.4 billion) solar cell plant in Malaysia.
In the latest efforts by the Taiwanese company to diversify its business away from the flat panel sector into the green energy sector, AUO, the world's third-largest flat panel maker, said it will invest US$350 million in a 50 percent stake in the joint venture with SunPower.
SunPower, a maker and developer of solar cells with a minimum 22 percent efficiency rate, commands the highest market share in the U.S. in residential, commercial, public sector and large-scale utility projects, and is also a market leader in Germany, Italy and Spain, according to AUO.
"The joint venture will strengthen AUO's presence in the global solar energy business and will allow the company to own a complete solar energy supply chain, " a company spokeswoman told CNA.
The joint venture is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year, targeting the global market, the company said.
In June 2009, AUO announced it was taking an over-50 percent stake in Japan-based silicon wafer maker M. Setek, giving it a toehold in the upstream solar energy business. The company now owns than 90 percent of M. Setek.
AUO added that a solar panel assembly plant it has been establishing in the Czech Republic is expected to become operational in June, while another assembly plant in Taichung started operations in March.
The company said it has also been working with foreign partners in solar system integration and solar power plant installation.
