Greece: Ex-minister charged in Siemens probe

Judicial officials in Greece say a former Socialist transport minister has been charged with money laundering as part of an investigation into alleged bribes paid by German industrial giant Siemens AG to secure contracts before the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The officials said Thursday that 65-year-old Tassos Mantelis has been barred from leaving Greece but has not been arrested, pending further investigation.
Mantelis told a parliamentary inquiry Wednesday that he had received a "campaign donation" of 200,000 German marks (EURO)102,250) from Siemens in 1998.
Mantelis served as transport minister between 1997 and 2000.
The current Socialist government has promised a crackdown on corruption amid the country's serious financial crisis.
