Germany, 5 others seek nonproliferation agreement

Germany says it has teamed up with Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Austria, and South Korea to push for an agreement at the New York conference reviewing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on published Thursday a joint statement by those countries saying the conference offers a chance to strengthen the global nonproliferation regime.
However, it said after weeks of intense discussions "differences of opinion" remain regarding the conference's final document.
The statement said all countries must show "a maximum of flexibility and will to cooperate."
The Nonproliferation treaty says nations without nuclear weapons will not acquire them and that countries owning them will eventually eliminate theirs.
