$50 million fund to help settlement boycott

The Palestinian labor minister has told The Associated Press his government plans to establish a $50 million fund to help thousands of Palestinians quit work in Israeli settlements.
The fund, to be formally announced Monday, would be a major step in a widening boycott campaign against settlements scattered across lands the Palestinians want for their state. The Palestinians have already banned the sale of settlement products in their shops.
Israel has denounced the campaign as harmful to peace efforts.
West Bank unemployment is high, and enforcing the ban on settlement work will be difficult. Labor Minister Ahmed Majdalani said Thursday that the government hopes to raise $50 million in local and international contributions to ease the transition.
