Danish shipper sells UK supermarket unit to Asda

Danish container shipping and oil group A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S says it has sold a British supermarket chain to Wal-Mart subsidiary Asda Stores Ltd. for 778 million pounds ($1.1 billion).
The group says its subsidiary Dansk Supermarked A/S agreed Thursday to sell Netto Foodstores Ltd. to Asda.
Dansk Supermarked CEO Erling Jensen says the 193 Netto stores in the British branch have been "profitable."
Jensen says the company wants to focus its efforts on the development of its business in Scandinavia and northern Europe.
After the transaction, Dansk Supermarked owns more than 1,100 stores with 40,000 employees.
A.P. Moller-Maersk controls 68 percent of Dansk Supermarket. The rest is held by Danish retail group Salling.
