French strike over plans to raise retirement age

Strikes across France are slowing train traffic and disrupting flights and schools, as workers protest plans to raise the retirement age beyond 60.
President Nicolas Sarkozy's government has called reforming France's over-stretched pension system his main priority this year.
The government says raising the retirement age is one way to reduce the growing costs of pension pay outs. Unions are opposed to raising the retirement age.
Commuter traffic around Paris was limited Thursday because of striking train drivers. Civil aviation authorities expected reduced flights at Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports because of the strikes.
Some schools and day cares were affected by the strikes. Protests were planned in several cities, with the main one in eastern Paris.
