Liberty Times: Basic competence tests for five metropolises

The year-end elections in the five special municipalities are important in that they will test whether voters are satisfied with the status quo and what expectations they have for the future. They will be a test of confidence in the two major political parties.
Therefore, the two parties' policies as well as the urban planning and governance abilities of their candidates will be crucial factors that will affect the outcome of the election.
An example is Taipei City. Following a vision by his predecessor Ma Ying-jeou, incumbent Mayor Hau Lung-bin has been working hard toward the goal of launching direct flights between Songshan Airport and Shanghai's Hongqiao Airport in June to realize a "one-day living circle" between the two cities.
However, some Taiwanese businessmen based in China have criticized the project, saying it is based on far-fetched imagination and is unrealistic. According to the businessmen, a one-way trip using the route will take up to eight hours because of serious traffic congestion in China.
The safety concerns surrounding Maokong Gondola and the network instability of the Neihu-Muzha line of the MRT system are two other problems passed down by Ma.
All these examples demonstrate that politicians' images are not reliable. Only those who dare to abandon the burdens of their parties and display their fortitude can create competitiveness for their cities. (May 27, 2010) (By Y.F. Low)
