Police: Naples mafia shakes down lotto winners

Naples police say local mobsters shook down winners of a (EURO)33 million ($40.62 million) lotto, using threats to extort tens of thousands of euros out of some of the 30 winners.
Winners of Italy's lottery and number-picking lotto games usually stay anonymous. But Avellino Carabinieri paramilitary commander Giammarco Sottili told reporters a local Camorra organized crime clan learned the identities of those who played the right numbers in the popular Superenalotto numbers game in January 2008.
Police said Wednesday that some winners, including merchants and businessmen in the small town, paid the (EURO)40,000 apiece demanded by the mobsters, but others resisted.
Authorities said wiretaps helped crack the scheme. Five suspects were arrested.
