Germany hosts meeting with 15 Afghan participants

Germany's defense minister says a meeting of nations serving in the NATO-led force in northern Afghanistan has agreed to try to hand control of the region to Afghan troops by mid-2011.
The DAPD news agency cited Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg as saying a meeting of the group Tuesday signaled its determination and cohesiveness in the region.
Thousands of new soldiers, including 5,000 from the U.S. will be coming into the region to help train Afghan security forces.
NATO's top official in Afghanistan for civilian affairs, Mark Sedwill, says the strategy for the north of the country is comprehensive and pointed in the right direction to "increase Afghan sovereignty."
The U.S. wants to start pulling out troops in July 2011 if conditions allow.
