Number of families in financial straits increases 55.4%

The number of families receiving government assistance after meeting low-income criteria rose 55.4 percent in 2009, according to statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) Saturday.
The big jump resulted mainly from an amendment to the Statute for Providing Aid to Families in Dire Straits in January 2009, which allows assistance to be granted to single-father and skipped-generation families, the MOI said in a statement.
A total of 18,776 households were defined as families in dire straits around Taiwan, with 1,202 led by men and the rest by women.
Of the male-led families, 59 percent were led by single divorced men, while 48 percent of the female-led families were run by women who were forced to raise children alone after their husband died, statistics showed.
