Taiwan medical team departs for China to help quake victims

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) A 20-member medical team assembled by the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China, departed for Xining, western China Sunday, to provide assistance to survivors of a deadly 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck there April 14.
Chang Huan-chin, leader of the team and superintendent of Lishin Hospital in Pingzhen, Taoyuan County, said before his departure that his team consists of medical personnel from Taipei City Hospital, National Cheng Kung University Hospital in Taiwan City, and Lishin Hospital.
Chang, whose experience includes relief work in the wake of the Sept. 21, 1999 quake in central Taiwan, the earthquake of May 12, 2008 in Sichuan, western China and other disasters, said that his team is carrying 1,000 kg of medicines, which is the maximum allowed because of the limited airlift capacity in the disaster area.
Most of the medicine would be used for preliminary surgery, according to Chang.
Given that the disaster area is located at an altitude of 4,000 meters, Chang said, the weather will be a severe challenge for his team, although each member is equipped with up to 15 kg of gear that includes heavy coats and medicine for altitude sickness.
The medical team is expected to arrive in Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province, Sunday night, via Hong Kong and Beijing.
Meanwhile Cheng Zongliang, a spokesman for China's Red Cross Society in Beijing, expressed gratitude for the assistance offered by its Taiwan counterpart.
Cheng told China's Xinhua news agency that the Taiwan medical team will work in the disaster area for one week.
The 7.1-magnitude temblor that struck western China on April 14 has left 1,484 dead and more than 12,088 injured, according to Chinese authorities. The death toll is expected to climb, as 312 people are still unaccounted for and hopes of finding any more survivors are fading three days after the disaster.
