Berlin Staatsoper set for move to temporary home

Berlin's Staatsoper says it will try to compensate for an upcoming move to smaller temporary premises during its renovation by putting on more new productions.
Musical director Daniel Barenboim said Tuesday that he has decided to view as an opportunity rather than a calamity the move to the Schiller Theater during the three-year renovation of the 19th-century Staatsoper building.
The Staatsoper will inaugurate its stay at its new home Oct. 3 with the world premiere of a work commissioned by Barenboim _ "Metanoia" by German composer Jens Joneleit.
The move to the Schiller Theater will take the Staatsoper _ whose building is located on the Unter den Linden boulevard in former East Berlin _ across the city's former Cold War divide into the west.
