Dalai Lama in Slovenia, but politicians stay away

The Dalai Lama will talk about ethics for the new millennium before thousands of Slovenians, but government officials won't meet him to avoid infuriating China.
The Tibetan leader is scheduled to lecture Tuesday in Maribor, Slovenia's second-largest city. Apart from ordinary people, he will meet only the Maribor mayor and two opposition leaders.
China accuses the Dalai Lama of favoring secession for Tibet, which it considers part of its territory, and regularly protests when political leaders meet him.
When the Dalai Lama was last in Slovenia, in 2002, then-Prime Minister Janez Drnovsek met him. The Maribor daily Vecer says politicians were less mindful of China's reaction because it "was not such an economic and political power then as it is today."
