Shanghai mayor arrives in Taipei for four-day visit

Taipei, April 6 (CNA) Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng arrived in Taipei for a four-day visit Tuesday morning, culminating 10 years of exchanges between the two cities that began in 2001 when President Ma Ying-jeou was mayor of the capital city.
The plane carrying Han and his entourage of more than 200 people arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport, where he was greeted by Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Yong-ping.
Protestors led by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party greeted Han at the airport and at the Grand Formosa Regent Taipei, where his delegation will stay.
According to Han's itinerary released by the city government, the first Shanghai mayor ever to set foot in Taiwan will attend the Taipei-Shanghai city forum Tuesday afternoon and deliver a keynote speech.
The annual forum, started in 2001 by civil groups as a channel for exchanges between the largest cities of Taiwan and China, is being organized at an official level for the first time this year.
Han is expected to sign four cooperation memorandums at the forum to boost cultural, travel, science park and environmental protection exchanges.
After presiding over the opening of the forum, he will visit the Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School to talk with high school students about the 2010 World Expo, which will open in Shanghai on May 1, and the Taipei International Flora Exposition.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin led a delegation to visit Shanghai in June 2008.
The two mayors will also attend a concert by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, which accompanied Han on the visit, at the National Concert Hall Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, Han will visit the National Palace Museum, the Bei-Tou Incinerator, and the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit system. He will also visit Taiwan's landmark skyscraper Taipei 101 and the Eslite Xinyi flagship bookstore.
Han will visit Cheng Hsin General Hospital and also visit Taichung City, Taipei County and Taoyuan County on Thursday, before returning to Shanghai Friday morning. (By Johnson Sun and Maubo Chang)
