Kyrgyz government offers electricity subsidies

Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have offered discounts to people most affected by a recent sharp hike in electricity and heating bills in an apparent bid to cool tempers in the Central Asian nation.
Kyrgyz Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov ordered the government Monday to pay half the power bills of households in remote and mountainous regions.
In recent weeks, there have been several large protests across the country against the increase in utility costs. The most active rallies have been held in Naryn, a town of 50,000 people in the eastern Kyrgyz highlands.
Opposition parties plan to hold an anti-government rally Wednesday in the capital, Bishkek, and expect thousands to attend.
