Chivas beats America, remains atop standings

Omar Arellano scored a first-half goal and goalkeeper Luis Michel made two key saves as Chivas edged archrival America 1-0 on Sunday night to remain atop the Mexican Clausura championship.
Arellano beat two defenders before scoring in the 35th for Chivas Guadalajara and Michel deflected shots by Antonio Lopez and Argentine Daniel Montenegro to preserve the win.
With four rounds remaining, Group 1 leader Guadalajara has 31 points from 13 rounds, one point ahead of Group 2 leader Monterrey.
The top two teams in each of the three groups qualify for the playoffs along with the best two teams left.
America is on a four-match winless streak and remained on 18 points in fourth place in Group 2.
Earlier, Toluca thrashed the Guadalajara Estudiantes 5-0 win and Chiapas pulled off a 3-0 upset win over Group 3 leader Santos.
Carlos Esquivel (12), Osvaldo Gonzalez (32), Antonio Naelson (33), Antonio Rios (54) and Diego Novaretti (58) scored for Toluca, who notched their third straight win to take over second place in Group 1 with 21 points.
In Torreon, Colombian Jackson Martinez put the Jaguars ahead in the 29th, Uriel Alvarez had an own goal in the 28th and Brazilian Danilo Veron sealed the win in the 83rd for Chiapas.
