Economic Daily News: Lessons from environmental pollution

The Formosa Plastics Group was recently ordered by the Environmental Protection Administration to clean up its seriously polluted 35.4-hectare Jenwu plant. The facility's pollution problems were first discovered four years ago, but it continued operating until recently and has caused even more serious pollution.
This latest environmental incident shed light on a serious lack of morality on the part of the company and on the government's dereliction of duty. After so many similar cases and a huge price paid, it is apparent that Taiwan has not learned lessons from these tragedies and has failed to make itself into a textbook model for other Asian countries.
The government promised 19 years ago that the Kaohsiung City refinery of state-oil giant CPC Corporation would be relocated in 25 years, but the issue and the facility's pollution still remain nearly 20 years later. The government and the company must deal with the issue in the near future.
If the government simply issues fines and forces companies to relocate in dealing with polluters, such an experience is not worth being transferred to other countries. (April 3, 2010) (By Flor Wang)
