Ma to focus on Taiwan's isolation in ECFA debate: spokesman

Taipei, April 3 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou will focus on Taiwan's economic isolation in arguing for a trade pact with China during an upcoming debate with the chairwoman of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on the issue, Ma's spokesman Lo Chih-chiang said Saturday.
Ma will focus on the argument that a proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) between the two sides across Taiwan Strait "is an important step in breaking through the country's isolation created when the DPP was in power," Lo said.
He stressed that the planned debate has nothing to do with Ma's attempt to raise his low public popularity rating.
Ma will tell the public in his much-anticipated debate with Tsai Ing-wen that his government has tried hard since taking office in 2008 to free the country from its international isolation, Lo said.
He contended that the DPP's "closed-door" policy not only marginalized Taiwan in the international economic community but also marginalized its diplomacy.
Lo said, however, that promoting the signing of the ECFA with China is only part of Ma's strategy to break out from under the shadow of Taiwan's isolation.
In response to some pundits who said the debate is an attempt by the president to increase his popularity and public support, Lo said Ma was delighted to debate with the DPP leader on the cross-strait trade pact in a rational manner.
The president hopes the public will obtain more information on the controversial agreement through the debate, he said, adding that Ma has not thought about his re-election bid in 2012.
