Lai Feng-wei to run for Kaohsiung mayor

Kaohsiung, April 3 (CNA) Lai Feng-wei, incumbent deputy secretary-general to the president, and former two-term Penghu County magistrate, announced Saturday his bid to run for Kaohsiung mayor.
Lai made the announcement while attending the inauguration of the Penghu Living Museum on the offshore county southwest of Kaohsiung.
Lai was born in Penghu.
Stressing that President Ma Ying-jeou had no prior knowledge of his plan to run in Kaohsiung, Lai said he made the decision after being encouraged by many of his fellow villagers. "After thorough deliberation, I decided to make the announcement in my homeland," he added.
Presidential Office Spokesman Lo Chih-chiang said Ma respects Lai's decision and that the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) would follow normal party procedure in fielding a candidate to run in Kaohsiung.
KMT lawmaker Chang Hsieh-yao also announced his desire to represent the party in the December election for Kaohsiung mayor.
Kaohsiung City, which will be merged with Kaohsiung County and upgraded to a special municipality in December, is traditionally a stronghold of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party. It is Taiwan's largest port city.
