Jackson Bend could be Zito's 2nd Derby horse

Nick Zito could have a second horse for the Kentucky Derby if Jackson Bend runs well in Saturday's $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.
Jackson Bend finished second in two races this year after winning five in a row as a 2-year-old in 2009.
"His greatest strength is that he is so consistent," the Hall of Fame trainer said Friday of the smallish colt he calls "Mighty Mite."
"With that in mind, that's what you have to hope for, that some day, those big horses don't show up and he stays consistent. ... Consistent makes you good."
Calvin Borel, last year's winner of the Kentucky Derby aboard Mine That Bird, has the call to ride Jackson Bend for the first time.
A win or runner-up finish Saturday would give Jackson Bend enough graded stakes earnings to qualify for the Derby. With the Derby limit at 20 horses, preference is given to the top graded stakes money earners.
Jackson Bend is 37th with $80,000 from second-place finishes in the Holy Bull and the Fountain of Youth, both at Gulfstream Park.
"Jackson Bend has to do well with these horses," Zito said. "He has to qualify and he has to get money."
The Wood winner earns $450,000, with $150,00 for second and $75,000 for third.
Zito already has Florida Derby winner Ice Box for the Derby on May 1. Ice Box ranks sixth on the grade stakes list with $457,500.
Eskendereya is the 4-5 favorite for the 1 1-8-mile Wood, with Jackson Bend the 4-1 second choice. Also in the field are Gotham winner Awesome Act, Tampa Bay Derby runner-up Schoolyard Dreams, Most Happy Fella and Carnivore.
