UK govt adviser resigns over ban of party drug

Britain's Home Office says the resignation of a member of the committee that advises the government on drug policy will not affect its plans to ban the party drug mephedrone.
The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs confirmed Friday that Eric Carlin had resigned from the committee, which recommended Monday that mephedrone _ and similar compounds _ are dangerous and should be controlled.
Carlin said in a blog post he felt that decision was based on "media and political pressure."
Earlier this week, another member quit the committee for similar reasons.
The committee's former chairman, David Nutt, was forced to step down last year for speaking out against the decision to toughen penalties for possessing marijuana. Two of his colleagues then quit in solidarity.
