UN: 4.3 mln people in southern Sudan need food aid

The U.N. World Food Program says 4.3 million people in southern Sudan need food aid this year because of successive droughts, high food prices and fighting between tribes.
Last year it said around 1 million southern Sudanese needed food assistance.
WFP spokeswoman Emilia Casella says the first crop in 2009 completely failed in many areas in the south and the second crop in November was also very low. She says many people have had to sell their possessions and cattle at low prices.
Casella said Tuesday the food assessment was done together with southern Sudan's agriculture ministry.
WFP says 2,500 people were killed by violence in southern Sudan last year and 350,000 were uprooted.
