Prosecutors will not appeal to unfreeze accounts of ex-First Lady Wu Shu-jen

Prosecutors will not appeal to unfreeze accounts of ex-First Lady Wu Shu-jen

Prosecutors said yesterday they would not file an appeal against a court decision to unfreeze NT$4.63 million held in an account by former First Lady Wu Shu-jen.
Wu was found guilty of money laundering and related charges last Sep. 11 and sentenced to life in prison and fines totaling NT$300 million. Her husband, former President Chen Shui-bian, also received a life sentence and fines of NT$200 million on corruption and money laundering charges. They are appealing their sentences.
Chen Yun-nan, the chief of the Supreme Prosecutors Office Special Investigation Division in charge of the investigation into the former First Family, said yesterday his unit would not file an appeal against the Jan. 13 decision by the Taiwan High Court agreeing to Wu's request to unfreeze the funds.
The SID has reportedly frozen accounts, securities and seven pieces of real estate owned by the family and totaling a value of just under NT$295 million.
Wu, her son Chen Chih-chung and daughter-in-law Huang Juei-ching filed a request with the High Court to release the funds because they found it difficult to make ends meet.
Chen works as an attorney at an opposition Democratic Progressive Party office in Kaohsiung City, while his wife gives piano lessons and Wu holds no job.
The High Court calculated that Wu needed monthly expenses of NT$122,000 or NT$732,000 for six months, with an added NT$3.9 million for legal fees.
Chen and Huang had access to a total of NT$4.78 million in their accounts and earned a wage, so the court rejected their requests to have other accounts unfrozen.
The former president has been held as a suspect at the Taipei Detention Center in Tucheng, Taipei County, since December 30, 2008. His custody has been extended several times despite his pleas that he was innocent and did not pose a flight risk.
