China Times: Get gangs off campuses

Taiwan editorial abstract (File 2 of a daily roundup) The detention of the teenage son of TV host Chen Kai-lun for alleged involvement in professional baseball bookmaking and violent debt collection has raised concern in society.
It is by no means an isolated case but rather reflects how deeply criminal gangs have penetrated local schools. The detention of Chen's son, Chen Ruei, indicates that campus security has deteriorated to an alarming level.
Aside from Chen Ruei, 11 other members of criminal gangs were also rounded up in the Taipei juvenile police squad's recent crackdown on baseball gambling and violent debt collection. Even more pathetic is that seven of the suspects were underage.
Preventing criminal rings from eroding campus law and order requires the concerted effort of students themselves as well as their parents, schools and law enforcement authorities.
Parents should pay close attention to their children's daily lives and when they encounter problems should patiently help them deal with those challenges.
Schools should cooperate with police in criminal investigations instead of trying to cover up gang behavior simply to protect their school's reputation.
Law enforcement authorities should step up efforts to drive criminal gangs off campuses by launching raids every day and improving crime fighting strategies.
