CNA to launch English mobile news service

Taipei, Jan. 31 (CNA) The Central News Agency -- Taiwan's national news agency -- will soon launch the country's first mobile phone news service in English to keep people around the world up to date on what's going on in Taiwan.
To be launched Feb. 1, "FocusTaiwan" will also serve as a resource for students who want to learn English and at the same time keep up with current events around the world, said Lillian Lin, chief of CNA's foreign news department.
The news agency has provided value-added mobile services in Chinese on a business-to-business (B2B) basis over the past decade, but it is now moving into the business-to-consumer (B2C) domain after creating a new news service platform earlier in the year.
Aside from reporting the top headlines, FocusTaiwan will also offer English abstracts of editorials from Taiwan's major Chinese-language newspapers on a daily basis to ensure comprehensive coverage, Lin said.
The service will also make available 20 captioned photos of the day that highlight the news and local culture to help foreign subscribers get a better feel for Taiwan, according to Lin.
In the near future, video news clips filed by CNA's 20 overseas correspondents will be also accessible via mobile phones, Lin added.
FocusTaiwan will be free, with subscribers paying only for Internet time to gain access to the content on their 3G phones.
Markus Wernhard, director of the Goethe Institute in Taipei, said getting the most up-to-date news on Taiwan via mobile phone would be very convenient, because staying on top of current issues in Taiwan is a big part of his job.
Wernhard added that he will suggest to his German friends to use the new service frequently to keep up with the latest developments.
CNA will formally introduce the new services on Feb. 3.
