South Korea confirmed a new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease yesterday, bringing the total number of outbreaks in three weeks to six. Nine cows at a farm in Pocheon, north of Seoul, tested positive for the disease on Saturday, Agriculture Ministry official Kim Dae-gyun said. All 81 cows on the farm were slaughtered as a precaution.
Quarantine workers were also slaughtering 77 cows and 13 deer on other farms near the latest outbreak as a precaution, the ministry said. The outbreak is about 3.8km from another farm in Pocheon where South Korea's first outbreak of the disease in eight years was reported.
