First lady promotes Cloud Gate dancers in U.S.

Taipei Jan. 30 (CNA) First lady Chow Mei-ching introduced the Cloud Gate Dance Theatre as the "pride of Taiwan" at a reception at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington Friday evening, before a performance, according to a statement released by the group.
Chow's appearance attracted many American friends of Taiwan from political, academic and artistic circles to the reception, and she sat among guests invited by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to watch the renowned group perform its signature "Moon Water." The first lady is accompanying the troupe on a North American tour at the invitation of Cloud Gate founder Lin Hwai-min.
Lin, who choreographed the piece, held a dialogue with the audience after the performance and answered their questions about the production.
Before arriving in the U.S. capital, the Cloud Gate dancers performed twice in Chicago. After another performance in Washington Saturday, the troupe will fly to Canada to perform in the 2010 Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver Feb. 5-6.
The first lady will accompany the dancers before returning to Taiwan Feb. 9.
