DPP Chair says to face WTO settlement over beef dispute

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party chairperson Tsai Ing-wen today said Taiwanese people should face the World Trade Organization dispute settlement if they voiced their objections to Taiwan’s beef imports from the United States, according to local media reports.

The U.S. would consider all options to solve the beef dispute including recourse to WTO arbitration, Deputy Representative of the Office of the US Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis recently said in Washington D.C.

But Tsai said that recourse to WTO arbitration should be regarded as a trade issue after the USTR announced that they would not rule out the possibility of the WTO arbitration appeal to solve the Taiwan-U.S. dispute.

The beef dispute resulted from President Ma Ying-jeou’s ignorance of the mainstream public opinion and a reckless beef import protocol of both sides, she added.
