Rania, Milan mayor launch Expo 2015 board at Davos

Lending a bit of her international star power, Jordan's Queen Rania partnered with the mayor of Milan on Friday to launch a women's advisory board for the 2015 World's Fair and its theme, "Feed the Planet, Energy for Life."
Letizia Moratti said she created the board in a bid to promote projects worldwide to highlight issues that affect women, from hunger, malnutrition and the need for clean water, to providing education and cooperation among different cultures.
"We believe that women can play a very important role," she told reporters after the board's inaugural meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.
Rania, the wife of King Abdullah, said women "feed the planet," care for families and are critical to meeting U.N. development goals that include cutting extreme poverty in half by 2015.
"Who's at greatest risk when food crises arise, when disaster strikes, when water and fuel are in short supply: women and their children," she said.
"And we see this all too clearly in Haiti today where women are rising from the ashes of the earthquake to create shelters from the rubble, to cook stews on the pavements and to comfort the suffering even as they count their own losses," Rania said.
The queen, who will serve as co-president of the board with Moratti, said the Expo projects can help women in many fields.
"That's why I'm keen to get working with this group so we can really reach out to women, especially in my region, the Middle East, where cultural traditions still hold women back from realizing their full potential," Rania said. "And I really want to see them as being equal partners and progress."
Other members of the board include Cherie Blair, wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair who heads her own foundation and the Loomba Trust; World Bank Managing Director Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; World Food Program Executive Director Josette Shearan and Kerry Kennedy, director of the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation of Europe.
