The Swiss ski federation says medal contender Didier Cuche has broken his right thumb during a World Cup giant slalom, which could affect his participation at the Vancouver Olympics.
The federation said Friday the super-G world champion traveled back to Switzerland and will undergo surgery at the Schulthess Clinic in Zuerich on Saturday.
Cuche hit a gate and crashed shortly before finishing his second run.
The Swiss federation said in a statement that "more details regarding possible consequences for participation at the Olympic Winter Games will be available after the operation."
