Thai soldier killed in gunfight with insurgents

Insurgents have killed a soldier and wounded two others in a gun battle outside a mosque in southern Thailand.
Police Col. Tanit Ramdit said the gunfight in Pattani province took place Friday after a remote-controlled bomb was set off, wounding three other soldiers who were waiting for a Muslim fellow officer to pray inside the mosque.
After setting off the bomb, about six insurgents started firing at the soldiers, he said. The Muslim officer then stepped out of the mosque and helped fire back at the insurgents. The gun battle lasted for 50 minutes before the insurgents fled.
Thailand's deep south provinces since 2004 have been the scene of a Muslim separatist insurgency in which more than 3,700 people have been killed.
